What it is
A study residence permit is available to foreigners studying at an accredited educational institution in Georgia — a university, college or school. It is a convenient ground for students and for families with school-age children. We translate the documents, tell you which certificate to get from the institution and file the application together with you.
A study residence permit is issued for the period of study at an educational institution authorised by the Ministry of Education of Georgia. This can be a higher education institution, a vocational college or a general school.
If the student is under 18, a parent submits the financial documents, and a birth certificate with a translation is also required.
Who this is for
- Students of Georgian universities and colleges.
- Schoolchildren and their parents.
- People enrolled in language or vocational programmes at accredited institutions.
Where you need to study to get a residence permit
The ground applies if the institution is authorised by the Ministry of Education of Georgia. These are public and private universities, colleges and schools. Short courses without authorisation are not a ground for a residence permit — check this before paying for tuition, or ask us.
Residence permits for schoolchildren and their parents
A child studying at a Georgian school can obtain a study residence permit. In this case a parent provides the financial documents. Parents of a minor child with a residence permit can in turn apply for a family reunification permit — so the whole family gets a legal ground to live in Georgia.
What a Georgian residence permit gives you
- Living in Georgia without visa runs or leaving every 365 days.
- A foreigner's identity card (binadroba) — the resident ID card.
- An electronic signature and access to public services on my.gov.ge.
- The option to bring your family on the family-reunification ground.
- Applying for visas at embassies in Georgia as a resident.
- A path to permanent residence and citizenship in the future.
What to do after the permit is approved
After approval you need to obtain the resident ID card (binadroba) and register at a residential address — that is, temporary address registration (propiska) in Georgia. If you do not own a home, the owner's consent is required. We help with both the registration and the card.
Extending the residence permit
To extend the permit, you must again meet the conditions of your ground or apply on a different ground — for example, switch from an IE to real estate or employment. It is best to apply early, no later than 40 days before your lawful stay ends. Extension is possible remotely, by power of attorney.
